About
Up in Flames is a representation of those who feel nostalgia and longing toward their loved ones. My goal was to capture the essence of forbidden love and for those that were never meant to be. My main medium was oil paint. To start this piece off, I carefully painted the two polaroid pictures, making them my focal point. Painting the background afterward was a bit difficult, but I decided on using soft colors that resonates with what I wanted to express. My final touches were adding the string which the polaroid's were clipped to, and adding small flames to match the blazing house in the background.
Challenge
My initial plan was just to have the background as a solid. black color. Later on, after I finished the two portraits, I thought it needed more context. Adding in the background after the portraits was difficult because I did not want to ruin the two portraits I have already painted. My next challenge was expressing the feeling of nostalgia with the black borders, by using oil paint. Carefully blending the harsh black and the soft sky colors was a tedious process.
