about.
This piece is one of my proudest works yet, and it's also my first attempt at charcoal. After creating this piece, my experience with charcoal has mostly been positive, even though I had negative ideas of it in the past because of the sheer messiness of it and difficulty to control the values. This piece is a portrait of Sun Wukong, a Chinese folklore characterized by his heroicness. My teacher suggested me to draw something different this time, and use a medium I'm unfamiliar with. This piece took a very long time. Many hours spent on it at home and at the studio. Now, this piece hangs up down the halls of my house, reminding my family of our culture and my passion for the arts.
challenge.
The main difficulties of this piece was navigating through charcoal, and the extreme detailing in the hair, and suit. When I first used charcoal, I found it super uncontrollable and difficult to blend. But after getting used to the flow of the charcoal, I soon realized it was super easy to build up the values. The detailing in the hair was difficult because capturing the realistic hairs but not drawing them one by one is a long process. In addition, the details of the body armor and suit were extremely difficult because of all the tiny detailing of metal, and rope. Capturing the true shine of the metal took a lot of patience.
